perforated buttons were, it is currently thought, talismanic in nature; they are
usually associated with female burials in Ireland Scotland and northern England.
Recently in Fife a set of six (jet & 1stone possibly glazed) were found
thought to be attached to a mans jacket (chest & pelvic area). Although they
are called buttons they were probably not used as clothing fasteners. British
