Apologies to everyone for the many mistakes I recently found
in the newer pages- I have now stopped trying to do any task
which requires my brain to be present- for the benefit of those
of you who don't know already I had an accident a couple of
years back which has left me with acute sciatica & back
problems.
I have been trying to work through the pain but lately I've had a
couple of almost pain free days and cut down on my
medication- not wishing to follow in the footsteps of Michael
Jackson- to discover to my horror that a lot of what I had
written was complete rubbish, well, full of errors which
amounts to the same thing! I think I've found all the
immediately obvious mistakes - particularly those involving the
use of my memory which is, according to my doctor, being
compromised by the medication. I am currently confining my
activities to cut n' paste from newspaper archives but If the
situation gets any worse I may have to give up completely.
What happened to the old site?
This site is a recovery of my old site which failed to display properly latterly
because Yahoo stopped supporting front page - they warned me via an new email
system that failed to work properly with my copy of Internet explorer, (according to
Yahoo help staff), consequently I only realised after the event. The text from my old
site when transferred does not hold its formatting and there is a tendency to
confusion in spelling e for n for one example- there seems to be some OCR
going on in the transfer and we all know, ( if you don't see my comment with
regard to the London Gazettes and Google patents), what results from the use of
that! . I have also found sections of text are just randomly missing. Text which is
not black on white has not been thoroughly checked, (but be careful because
some people have reported that their browser displays this as black) , the
backmark list for example- and even those that have been checked may still
contain errors, I'm finding them less frequently now but even so... Please bear
with me whilst I correct these problems. Pages with print in this colour have not
been checked at all. Editing and formatting are painfully slow so please be patient.
I have managed to re-use a couple of the Old pages ie Banks & Industrial Fire
Brigades but some pictures are not displaying and there are only thumbnails, you
will need to use the backpage button on your browser to return because it won't
allow me to connect with the other pages, again when I get the time I shall replace
them.
Patent pages
Please excuse the mis-numbering etc. originally I was attempting to extract from
my notes the patents, (for which I have or know of examples), from Britain, France
,Germany & USA and display them all on one page, ( which is why for more
generalized information it's worth reading the UK page first), unfortunately that
didn't work too well. I had problems particularly when it came to renumbering
pictures and placement. The only reasons they are currently published on this site
is because I am having trouble with some photo formats and with the layout which
doesn't display the same in preview as on the web - plus I didn't know how to
publish without the pages appearing on search engines etc. & my understanding
is that unlinked pages makes your site score low in search results.
Please bear with me whilst I am correcting these flaws. I was giving access to
certain people on the previous site - whilst writing the page in another programme
- and in the middle of re-writing the whole thing thanks to their kind help- some of
the cut & paste resulted in things like associating Chatwin & Ingram instead of
Cox and a couple of other errors, I think I have corrected those but there could still
be some I haven't spotted so if you notice anything fishy please let me know. I am
amazed at how many times I can read something before I realise there is anything
wrong!
Finally pretty much all of the pages on this site are extracted from my notes and
that shows in terms of polish because there isn't much.
Click the thumbnails to see a larger images isn't currently working, ( USA &
France are now functional & I have to confess it wasn't the software it was my
fault) - well not in the three browsers I have tried so far that is. Footnotes are
currently bracketed within the text - which makes for occasional difficult reading. I
do apologise the programme I am using does not support sub and super script
and I have a tendency to ramble on which doesn't help.
