This is a pro bono website dedicated to the
promotion of research and the free exchange of information on everything
to do with buttons; which can be of all shapes, sizes and
materials from any nation or period.
Buttons from one country can turn up in any
other, some arrive as
the spoils or detritis of war others were imported for their beauty
and quality; in recent years the activities of collectors have added to
the worldwide distribution. TheTrade Mark above1 was
chosen because it so admirably describes button collecting the field
truly is the World.
I for one would very much like to acquire more
information about overseas buttons and button companies. In order to
encourage a wider audience and international cooperation I am
uploading the more internationally appealing button information first.
Anyone who would like to translate these pages into any other
language would be most welcome. If you have any information that you
think would be suitable for sharing please contact me;( scans of photographs / postcards of people which clearly show buttons,or buttons with registered design and patent marked are particularly welcome), I am more than
happy to play host to pages for other collectors -perhaps without a
website or space of their own and or otherwise unsuitable for inclusion in
collecting journals etc.
I have tried to make this site as interesting and
informative as possible, given the amount of time I have to
spend on it and it must be said my rather limited web publishing skills- not so much a web master as a web bodger- (so far there are 2900 files (400MB)on this site including images they are just the tip of the iceberg I have 11GB of the same type of material to sort and upload) If I have a lot of visitors or, more importantly, feedback then I shall invest more time on the most popular
areas. So if you would like to see more of a particular subject do let me
know.
New feature: contributors, whatever the contribution, are added to an e-mail list and notified of changes to this site as they happen; which is normally every Friday but due to publishing deadlines April/May O7 will be somewhat short of new material. An additional benefit of contributing is that you can have copies of the pages that are locked.
I would be very surprised to hear that even an
experienced collector could leave without having seen something new or
at least found something of interest; so do look round
and come back
soon as I expect there will be constant changes.
Increasingly the content is becoming a response to email. I was getting into the habit of inserting responses all over the place, including here, which made sense to the mailer but didn't necessarily to others will in future be posted on the advanced guestbook as a place where people who would like to make comments about this site, (or me if you keep it clean), can do so also if you have a question about company history or trade marks, patents etc. I would be grateful if you would take the time to pose it here; there is the additional benefit of others being able to answer those questions which I cannot and it saves me the time taken to write them in, thank you. (Contact page has a link the button for which actually leads to the guestbook, you don't have to join anything just type in the name you wish to be known by real or web ID; e mail is not a required field so if you do not wish to show an address don't fill it in).
