Of course this is also a useful yardstick for measurements in
general; given that the size they were producing is standard and on a
readily available type gives everyone a baseline for converting to
metric and has obvious application for dating buttons by size alone- if
it's not a standard metric size it was probably created using lines.
Unfortunately this has to be done for each individual company since
there was no universal cut off date.
